The Ohio State community recently convened for the AI Fluency Forum, a gathering at the Ohio Union to ignite discussions and develop solutions that harness the transformative power of artificial intelligence, as per a report by Ohio State News. The event, endorsed by the Office of Academic Affairs, was part of a broader initiative to integrate AI education into the undergraduate curriculum with the goal to equip students not only to utilize AI tools but to question, innovate, and forge new frontiers in technology.

Speakers at the forum, including faculty and staff from various disciplines, highlighted the critical importance of this initiative and the need for a collaborative approach to tackle the challenges posed by AI, the forum also addressed how AI can enhance pedagogical methods and be applied in research initiatives, according to Ohio State News, Shereen Agrawal, executive director of the Center for Software Innovation, noted that "We are going to hit those challenges at scale with the brightest minds, the breadth and depth of talent to be able to think about these things and to figure out how we can, together, solve them."

Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda expressed the institution's commitment to critical thinking and ethical judgement in AI education, stating, "Our bet at Ohio State is that we, as a community of scholars, will answer that question locally. And the university will do all it can to provide the scaffolding support to go on that journey," in a statement obtained by Ohio State News. A wide range of resources, including on-demand courses and workshops, are available to support instructors and researchers in implementing AI, as highlighted by Anika Anthony, associate vice provost and director of the Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning.

An example of the practical application of AI tools was demonstrated by Alex Davis, chief data scientist with the Translation Data Analytics Institute, who showed how Notebook LM, provided through Ohio State’s partnership with Google Public Sector, can drastically reduce the time spent on research tasks. "The key here is I’m partnering with the [Notebook LM] model. I’m asking it critical questions," Davis explained in a statement obtained by Ohio State News, further emphasizing the human element as the key to leveraging AI's capabilities. Meanwhile, Ness Shroff, Ohio Eminent Scholar and director of the AI(X) Hub, reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for addressing significant challenges with AI in the mix, commenting that there is an aspiration for "cross-pollination of research, ideas between the domain experts and the AI experts."
