Weather patterns over the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes are due for a rollercoaster ride. According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, OH, residents in the area should brace for a spectrum of weather changes from high-pressure sunshine to gusty winds and rain showers, with the first snowflakes of the season hinted for the near future.
Today, Ohioans can bask in the light of mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, with high pressure from the Lower Ohio Valley ensuring a calm start. But this tranquility is fleeting as weather conditions are expected to rapidly evolve. A warm front will be lifting across the region late tonight, telegraphing more volatile weather patterns to come. With the pressure of that moment looming, a cold front is also predicted to sweep through the area late Wednesday, possibly stirring up rain showers and isolated thunderstorms that could bring strong winds—up to 50 mph.
“Southwest winds ahead of the cold front will increase 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph,” the NWS states, informing people to anticipate a windy Wednesday afternoon. The longer-term outlook for after the cold front is a turn toward cooler temperatures, with high-pressure promising fair weather by Thursday, yet that's just a temporary pacifier for what's to come.
By Friday, weather patterns are anticipated to shift from a zonal flow to a large upper-level trough, bringing more moisture and possibly isolated thunder. Showers will become widespread, and according to the forecast, rainfall could accumulate around a quarter to one-third of an inch. “Rainfall amounts will generally be a quarter to a third of an inch possible,” the NWS forecast predicts, prefiguring a wet end to the workweek.
The weekend promises even chillier conditions as a deep upper-level trough develops over the region, possibly heralding in the season's first snowfall. Between fleeting lake effect showers and a brief respite on Saturday, another round of rain showers is expected to roll in and transition to snowy conditions by Sunday night. While exact timing and amounts are still up in the air, the idea of snow is becoming a tangible reality for some communities—poised and waiting, for the first flakes of the season are on the way.
