The Oklahoma City Fire Department has embarked on a new partnership with OKC Animal Welfare, stepping beyond their traditional role of fighting fires to also help ensure that lost pets find their way back to their families. This fresh initiative, as shared in a social media post, allows those who encounter stray pets to sidestep the shelter system, potentially speeding up the reunion process.

Announced to commence this November, Fire Stations 25 and 30 will be equipped with the capability to scan for microchips in stray animals, a direct resource for the public who, when finding a stray pet can bring it to these fire stations to have it scanned, if a microchip is identified they will receive the microchip number and instructions on contacting the owner, which can result in swift retrieval and relief for worried pet owners according to the official OKCFD's Facebook page.

This partnership is not a catch-all solution, as pets cannot be left at the fire stations indefinitely, but it is a step towards reducing shelter overcrowding and conserving resources while emphasizing the importance of community involvement in local welfare initiatives. For those unable to care for a found animal or in need of further assistance, OKC Animal Welfare dispatch remains available to help.
