In an effort to protect the access Oregonians have to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Attorney General Dan Rayfield took action last night. Alongside a coalition comprising of 22 attorneys general and three governors, Rayfield filed for a temporary restraining order to secure the full November SNAP benefits for Oregon residents, which were already distributed last Friday. According to a statement from the Oregon Department of Justice, the district court this morning has halted the Trump Administration's attempt to retract these benefits.

"This kind of whiplash lands directly on families who are just trying to keep food on the table," Rayfield stated, addressing the urgency of the situation. The pursuit orchestrated by the Trump Administration, according to Rayfield, was a direct threat to vulnerable, hungry families, which Oregon stands resolute against. As recorded by the Oregon Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Agriculture had unexpectedly ordered states to "immediately undo" the allocation of full SNAP benefits for November, creating an untenable situation for the states involved and potentially harming families dependent on the aid.

However, early this morning, the Court issued a stay on USDA's directive, ensuring that SNAP benefits continue to be available to those in Oregon who rely on them. A hearing on the States' TRO motion was scheduled for 12:30pm PT to discuss the further course of action, as per the Oregon Department of Justice.

The plight to uphold these crucial benefits is not Oregon's alone. Rayfield's motion for the temporary restraining order found solidarity among a broad coalition. Joining Oregon were the attorneys general of multiple states including Arizona, California, and many others, as well as the governors of Kansas, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. These joined forces reflect a widespread commitment to protecting the well-being of families who count on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to put food on their tables, as detailed by the Oregon Department of Justice. Families across Oregon can, for now, breathe a sigh of relief with the knowledge that their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits remain intact.
