Two members of the research team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have just upped their professional game, earning senior membership status from the esteemed Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In a recent announcement, Bryan Maldonado from the Building Envelope Materials Research Group and Jin Dong of the Interactive Controls Group have been honored by their peers for outstanding contributions in their respective fields, as reported by ORNL.
This accolade isn't handed out to just anyone; it’s a recognition that’s held by a mere fraction, about 10%, of IEEE’s 450,000-strong membership pool. Both Maldonado and Dong have made significant strides in their research projects, the magnitude of which being recognized by their induction into the senior ranks. Joining ORNL in 2020, Maldonado has a knack for blending artificial intelligence with building construction. His research is not just confined to the walls of construction; he has taken it on the roads, examining fuel performance in combustion engines, as noted by the lab's press release.
Jin Dong, on the other hand, has been with ORNL since 2016. His focus lies in the critical infrastructures that power our lives, specifically modeling and controlling power and energy systems. With multiple projects under his belt, Dong’s work aims to streamline and secure the distribution grids fundamental to our energy use. Honoring his efforts, the IEEE Power & Energy Society acknowledged him with two best paper awards between 2024 and 2025, a testament to his ground-breaking research published by ORNL.
ORNL, managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science, is at the frontier of tackling key scientific challenges. The office is heralded as the nation's cornerstone for advancing research in physical sciences, as highlighted by ORNL.
