Streets in Sacramento are undergoing safety improvements, with the Department of Public Works implementing more than 100 citywide projects as part of its Transportation Safety Initiative, according to Sacramento City Express. Launched after City Council approval last March, the initiative helps the department address pressing safety concerns more quickly.

A key feature of the initiative is the formation of a specialized Transportation Safety Team within the Public Works, responsible for the rapid deployment of interim safety projects along Sacramento’s High Injury Network, assorted tasks they've taken with gusto since April despite the full team yet to fully assemble; fresh recruitments include a Supervising Engineer, anticipated to start in January 2026 and two Traffic Investigation team members, one starting in December the other in January with plans for more hires once leadership positions are established.

The projects span across a variety of interventions, such as "17 quick-build projects, 39 locations of intersection daylighting, and 17 school-zone safety upgrades which encompass high-visibility crosswalks and enhanced signage," according to the Sacramento City Express. Particularly, at the intersection of Sutterville Road and Mead Avenue, modifications include new vertical flexible posts, distinct yield markings, and signage that alerts drivers to yield to pedestrians.

The progress report outlines updates to Sacramento’s Vision Zero Action Plan, which will use recent crash data to develop new strategies and identify the top 20 locations for quick-build safety improvements. Residents’ concerns have been submitted through 311 and City Council offices. For more details, see the full report at Sacramento City Express.
