An Oxnard man has been formally charged with the murder of Alejandro Soto following a shooting earlier this month. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office reports that Jose Angel Ramirez, 18, was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including the deliberate shooting at an occupied vehicle.
According to a statement from the DA's office, the shooting occurred on November 8, around 9:50 p.m. on West Hueneme Road. Oxnard Police officers quickly responded to the scene and found Soto with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the head. Despite being promptly rushed for emergency surgery at Ventura County Medical Center, Soto sadly did not pull through and died a week later on November 15.
The investigation swiftly pointed to Ramirez as the suspect, leading to his arrest on November 17. Describing the charges, the District Attorney Erik Nasarenko indicated Ramirez is also accused of "personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury" and committing a felony following his release on bail for a separate offense. Senior Deputy District Attorney Richard Simon from the Major Crimes Homicides Unit is the lead prosecutor on the case.
Ramirez, whose bail has been set at $2 million, made his initial court appearance recently, with the arraignment now scheduled to take place on December 18. As the community grapples to make sense of the violence, the Oxnard Police Department continues its work, underscoring the repercussions of such a grave incident - loss of life, a ripple of mourning, and a stark reminder of the fragility of peace in city streets.
Further details about the case will likely emerge at the upcoming arraignment. For now, Ramirez awaits trial, the weight of the charges against him heavy, emblematic of the larger societal struggles against a backdrop of gun violence and a justice system constantly tested by such cases.
