Over the weekend, a tragedy unfolded on the northbound Interstate 95 in Brevard County when 27-year-old paramedic Mary Jolly, lauded as a 'good Samaritan,' lost her life after stopping to aid crash victims. According to WESH, Jolly was struck by a vehicle as she was assisting at the scene of an earlier accident. She was subsequently airlifted to a Florida hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The initial crash involved a 2019 Chevy Impala, which, after colliding with a Volkswagen, resulted in the Volkswagen ending up in a ditch and the Impala hitting a concrete median. In the chaotic aftermath, Mary Jolly, together with her wife, had pulled over to help. Tragically, while attempting to avoid the crash scene, Jolly was fatally hit by a Nissan Murano.
Jolly's contributions to her field and community were noteworthy. Since joining GEMS in 2021, she has not only contributed as a paramedic but has also been an active member of the department's swift water rescue team. As WFTV reported, her impact was acknowledged by GEMS Deputy Chief Jamie McConnell, who stated, "Mary was more than a colleague — she was part of our EMS family." He emphasized the depth of her dedication to the community, stating, "Her compassion, steady presence, and deep commitment to serving this community touched countless lives."
As per the Florida Highway Patrol, the drivers involved in the incident all remained on scene. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
