The Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) is sounding the alarm over the use of kratom and synthetic variants, specifically the compound 7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), in light of recent overdose deaths reported by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The substance, often found in products like gummies, drink mixes, or concentrated liquid shots, is being flagged as dangerous due to its unregulated nature and the potential for overdose, given the unknown concentration levels of 7-OH in these products.
As emphasized by PPHD and reported by CityOfPasadena.net, six individuals in LA County recently died after ingesting 7-OH. The overdoses occurred among young adults aged between 18 to 40 years old, though no confirmed deaths have been tied to 7-OH ingestion in Pasadena so far. The health department's Acting Health Officer, Dr. Parveen Kaur, stated, "The safest choice is to avoid all 7-OH products." Dr. Kaur also highlighted the drug's addictive properties and the amplified risks when combined with alcohol or other substances, "At low doses, 7‑OH acts as a stimulant; at high doses, as an opioid. This product is highly addictive, and combining it with alcohol, prescription drugs, or illicit substances can dangerously slow breathing and even cause death."
While the Pasadena health authorities continue to advocate for complete avoidance of these products, they are also advising the public on harm reduction strategies for those who choose to still use. Recommendations include not using alone to ensure the presence of someone who can administer naloxone in the event of an overdose, staggering use in groups for the same reason, and carrying naloxone, which can counteract opioid effects and restore breathing.
To support individuals potentially struggling with substance use, PPHD has listed numerous resources. These include the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Overdose Prevention webpage, Substance Use Disorder Treatment services available in LA County, and the Service and Bed Availability Tool. Additionally, the Poison Control hotline at (800) 222-1222 and the Substance Abuse Service Helpline (SASH) at (800) 854-7771 has been offered as critical support lines for those in need. For continued updates and information on the health advisory, Pasadena residents are encouraged to stay connected through the City's social media channels or by contacting the City Service Center.
