Wilkeson received $857,250 from the Pierce County Council on October 21 to expand Coke Oven Park and conserve nearby natural lands after the Fairfax Bridge closure affected local access and tourism. County Executive Ryan Mello said, “This investment expands public access to our region’s incredible natural beauty while supporting local economic opportunities vital to the Wilkeson community,” according to the Pierce County.
Project plans include new hiking trails, a historic mining tour, and future possibilities for campsites across 139 newly acquired acres. The expansion aims to preserve the Wilkeson Creek ecosystem while helping stabilize the town’s economy, as reported by the Pierce County.
Mayor-elect Jayme Peloli, who leads the Wilkeson’s Way Forward campaign, is working on new recreational projects that aim to support education and the local economy. She said, "Through this investment, we’re creating a space where people can connect with nature and explore Wilkeson’s history," reflecting the town’s plans to improve outdoor areas. The effort is funded in part by Pierce County Conservation Futures, a program that helps preserve land for wildlife, recreation, and community green space.
