As Pittsburgh weathers through a mix of snow and gusty conditions today, residents north of I-80 need to brace for one last afternoon of lake-effect snow. According to a recent forecast by the National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA, the region could see accumulations between 6 to 10 inches, with totals up to 12 inches not ruled out if conditions persist. A Lake-Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for Forest County until 1 PM today.
The same source reports isolated wind gusts may reach up to 55 mph in eastern Tucker County, prompting a Wind Advisory effective until 10 AM. Pittsburgh residents can apart from the remainder of the day to be windy with gusts up to 25-30 mph across the area. By Monday evening, however, a subtle high-pressure pressure descending from the Upper Midwest is expected to provide dry and more tranquil weather conditions.
Looking forward to Tuesday, a new system is forecasted to bring a rain and snow mix to the area, with potential for a tricky Tuesday morning commute. Early precipitation may commence as snow, with lingering low-level dry air supporting some wet bulbing aloft, as per the forecast. Sleet isn't out of the question, and with surface temperatures hovering near freezing, forecasters are advising caution for travelers.
Temperature profiles near freezing could quickly turn precipitation into rain by later in the day as surface temperatures rise. The expected rainfall amounts in the lowlands are between 0.10-0.25 inches. While it's light, the rain could still amount to slick spots for the Wednesday morning commute, particularly in the eastern ridges where ice could form overnight.
Into the weekend, Pittsburgh is looking at above-average temperatures, but another weather disturbance is set to bring more rain as soon as Thursday night, lasting possibly through Saturday. Come Sunday, a drier trend may return, but forecasters at the National Weather Service suggest keeping an eye on the ever-changing and active weather patterns affecting the region.
