The Los Angeles Police Department has reported a confrontation in Canoga Park that escalated into gunfire, though no injuries were sustained. On Monday, officers from the Topanga Patrol Division were dispatched after receiving a 911 call about an Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The caller described a man, later determined to be 27-year-old Marcus Hayes, brandishing a firearm. This event occurred around 12:25 p.m. near the 8300 block of Northgate Avenue.
Upon their arrival, the LAPD officers witnessed Hayes running and commanded him to drop his weapon, which he disregarded, initiating a foot pursuit through nearby apartment complexes. Returning to Northgate Avenue, Hayes confronted the pursuing officers with his gun, which led to "an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS)," according to an LAPD official statement. Despite the exchange, Hayes was not hit by the gunfire.
Following the shooting, Hayes was seen tossing his firearm onto the street and surrendering by raising his hands. However, he reportedly became aggressive while being detained, "clenched his fist and attempted to strike" the officers, as indicated by the LAPD's account. His resistance led to an altercation with law enforcement on the ground before he was ultimately brought into custody. It was noted that an ambulance was requested for Hayes, presumably for injuries suffered during his arrest, as reported by KLTA.
Investigators recovered a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol along with a 15-round magazine at the scene, items which are now booked as evidence. Importantly, no officers or civilians were injured during the incident—a detail that holds significant weight considering the potential for greater harm, due to the presence of a firearm and the subsequent gunfire. Hayes is currently being held at Valley Jail in Van Nuys,, with bail set at $1.35 million. Information regarding his court date had not been released at the time of the reports.
