Last night at the South Waterfront, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) sent its Incident Command Team (IMT) to watch the demonstrations. According to a press release, the Crowd Management Incident Commander (CMIC) led the operation. The team included the Rapid Response Team (RRT) and Dialogue Liaison Officers (DLOs). The DLOs, wearing white shirts, helped communicate between police and protesters.
The PPB reported that the evening passed without any major incidents and that no one was arrested. They noted, however, that overall, protests at South Waterfront have resulted in 67 arrests so far. The Bureau also clarified that, in line with PPB Directive 810.10, it does not enforce immigration laws but continues to focus on public safety and enforcing state laws.
Public safety alerts and updates from the PPB are available on their Events channel on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. Chief Day has also shared a letter to the community and a FAQ about immigration, which can be found on the PPB website for more information.
The PPB stated that its role includes supporting lawful protests while addressing criminal behavior when it occurs. They noted that the lack of arrests at a protest does not mean individuals won’t be charged later. Investigations into criminal activity will continue, and cases will be referred to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office when appropriate. More information about PPB’s Public Order teams is available on their website.
