Tamena Jaceeta Strickland, 37, was found guilty except for insanity of second-degree murder for the death of her younger brother, Deante Strickland, and guilty of two counts of attempted murder for shooting her grandmother and aunt, both named Shirley Strickland. The stipulated-facts trial resulted in her life-long commitment to the Psychiatric State Review Board and a concurrent 22-year prison sentence, as reported by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.
The tragic events on August 2, 2019, deeply affected the Portland State University community, with vigils and tributes honoring Deante, remembered for his diligence and humility. According to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, if the Psychiatric State Review Board determines Strickland is mentally stable before the 22-year prison term ends, she will continue serving the remainder of her sentence through the Department of Corrections.
Multnomah County District Attorney Senior Deputy Melissa Marrero said, "Our hearts remain with Deante’s family, his friends and the broader Portland State University and Central Catholic High School communities." She added, "He was loved by all that knew him, and his loss continues to be deeply felt across our community." The court’s judgment addresses accountability, public safety, and the role of mental illness in the case. The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office noted the Portland Police Bureau’s investigation, which supported thorough legal proceedings and a verdict reflecting both justice and the circumstances of the tragedy.
