Local health officials reported yesterday that two additional foxes in Bexar County have tested positive for rabies. These cases were found near three other infected foxes identified earlier in October, bringing the total number of rabid foxes this year to at least five. According to KSAT, the county’s total confirmed rabies cases in 2025 now stands at 22.

The affected foxes were reported and captured on November 20. One was found in the 3800 block of Mahogany Cove and the other in the 27000 block of Smithson Valley Road, both showing aggressive and unusual behavior. In response, the Bexar County Office of Emergency Management is preparing to launch a volunteer initiative to remind residents to keep their pets’ vaccinations up to date, as per Fox San Antonio.

With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and an expected increase in outdoor activities, authorities are advising residents to exercise caution and avoid contact with wildlife or unfamiliar animals. Officials recommend reporting any animals exhibiting unusual behavior to local authorities. They also emphasize the importance of keeping pets vaccinated against rabies to help prevent the spread of the virus.

Bexar County health officials advise anyone who suspects a pet has been exposed to rabies, or who has experienced an animal bite, to contact the local animal control authority immediately. Residents in unincorporated areas of Bexar County can reach animal control by calling (210) 335-9000 or emailing [email protected].
