Raleigh's Pullen Arts Center is currently exhibiting a striking chalk wall mural that's much more than decorative art. The piece, created by local interdisciplinary artist Emily Rubin Malpass, is a bold statement on resilience and self-determination. Themed "Sow, Make, Repeat," the featured dandelion motif is an emblem of defiance against the odds, resonating with values Emily cherishes both in her art and advocacy work.
In a statement obtained by the City of Raleigh's official website, Emily's work is described as pairing "bold graphic imagery and pattern work with text, communicating messages of empowerment, encouragement, and calls to action." Indeed, her work extends beyond the aesthetic, seeding inspiration and validation for the local artist community. Its timely message mirrors the challenges we're facing in contemporary society, reminding us of the creative spirit's resilience.
Emily Rubin Malpass, who's not just adept in the three-dimensional world of ceramics and jewelry but also versed in printmaking and letterpress, intends this mural to be a source of encouragement. It captures philosophies imparted by mentors and aims to propagate them through the audience. Her biography reveals a commitment to inclusive craft arts, supporting learners of diverse abilities and backgrounds.
The invitation to experience this evocative mural stands until January 25, 2026. The Pullen Arts Center, located at 105 Pullen Rd., Raleigh, NC, welcomes visitors with an interest in local arts and culture.
