Michigan is expected to see record Thanksgiving travel this year, with AAA projecting that more than 2.6 million residents will travel at least 50 miles from home between November 25 and December 1. Most travelers—over 2.3 million—are expected to drive, marking a slight increase from last year, as per FOX17 Online.
Air travel is also rising, with more than 224,000 Michiganders planning to fly despite recent cancellation concerns, as AAA’s Debbie Haas noted that “travelers are showing flexibility and resilience and relying most on driving,” according to The Detroit News. Another 80,155 people are expected to use buses, trains, or cruises, an 8 percent increase from last year.
The national average price for gas is $3.06 per gallon, as mentioned by WXYZ. Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons before Thanksgiving, as well as all day on Thursday, are expected to be the busiest travel times, with delays on I-94 from Kalamazoo to Detroit possibly reaching about three hours. AAA estimates 81.8 million Americans will travel for Thanksgiving, including about 73 million by car and around six million by air. The Detroit News reports that “Florida, especially the cities of Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami” is the top U.S. destination, and Paris, Amsterdam, and Vienna are among the top international destinations.
