San Antonio residents are welcoming back a familiar community space with upgraded amenities as the Las Palmas Branch Library reopens its doors. Following a significant renovation funded by city bonds and contributed funding, the library located at 515 Castroville Rd., 78237, is back in business. Services resumed on Monday at noon, while a grand reopening celebration is marked on the calendar for December 6, according to the City of San Antonio.
Expected to be a hub of free activities suitable for the family, the celebration promises to cater to a diverse audience with food, performances, and crafts, starting at 10 a.m. upon passing through the library's doors, told the Las Palmas community to look forward to in a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio's press release, visitors will notice a 2,000 square foot expansion, including the new H-E-B Community Room, before the festivities begin.
In the pursuit of modernization, the library's Teen and Children's areas have been relocated and renascent, infused with technology upgrades that encompass the computer lab and community meeting room. Patrons utilizing the library will also experience improved customer service areas, freshly renovated restrooms, and a more contemporary collection of books and materials. Enhancements didn't end there, with a new monument sign erected, equipped with a digital marquee designed to catch the public eye, as per the City of San Antonio.
Since the closure in March 2023, alternative library services operated out of Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) until just days ago, November 10. A new lease on life isn't new for the library, which first opened its doors back in 1969, undergoing a previous renovation in 2009, and has been a fixture in the San Antonio landscape, handed over by the Las Palmas Corporation originally. The library's Director, Sukrit Goswami, expressed pride in the reinvigorated facility, stating, "I’m honored to welcome our community back to the renovated and expanded Las Palmas Branch Library," in a release on the City of San Antonio's website. "This branch has long been a cornerstone for Westside families, students, and neighbors, and now it’s ready to serve in even bigger and better ways."
