On Thursday, Rice University began the $120 million "Gateway Project," a redevelopment of its historic Rice Stadium, famous for hosting Super Bowl VIII and President Kennedy's moon speech. The renovation will reduce seating from 47,000 to 30,000 to create a more intimate fan experience and accommodate events like concerts and potential FIFA matches.

At the ground-breaking ceremony, Rice Athletic Director Tommy McClelland emphasized the goal of making the stadium a lively, community-focused space. He said, "It has to be the thing to do," envisioning it as a hub for alumni, fans, and local gatherings, according to Chron.

Rice Stadium will undergo renovations under the "stadium in a park" concept. The west side will have a new concourse with chairback seats, loge boxes, and flexible event spaces. The east side will have fewer upper deck seats for better field views and a 360-degree concourse for easier navigation. New concession stands and updated amenities will replace old facilities, with McClelland saying, "Right now, we do not have a deep fryer in the stadium. So, if you eat fried food, it's because it was done on a food truck. We're really moving forward," as reported by Chron. Community feedback, including concerns about parking, has been considered. Rice University President Reginald DesRoches said, "I think connecting it more to the village is going to be better for Rice and certainly better for the community, the surrounding community," as per KHOU. Renovations are planned to be completed by the 2028 season.
