A Sacramento court has found Hamdi Bazyan guilty of multiple charges, including attempted murder and animal cruelty, stemming from a December 2021 attack on his parents and the family cat. The conviction, delivered Thursday, followed disturbing testimony detailing the violent domestic assault, according to the District Attorney's Office.
According to the prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Alexandra James of the Elder Abuse Unit, the jury found Bazyan guilty of two counts of attempted murder, one count of animal cruelty, two counts of false imprisonment, and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon; the jury also confirmed the allegations of causing great bodily injury and personal use of a knife. The events in question began when Bazyan's erratic behavior on December 26, 2021, led his family to contact the police. After police left, Bazyan armed himself with three large knives and imprisoned his parents in their bedroom, assaulting them with both his fists and a cane.
The assault escalated when Bazyan turned his aggression toward the family pet, stabbing the cat nine times and attempting to asphyxiate her. The rampage continued as he stabbed his mother in the torso; his father suffered multiple stab wounds while trying to protect his wife. "His mother was able to escape to a neighbor’s home to call police," as reported by the District Attorney's Office. Bazyan fled upon hearing police sirens but was later apprehended near the American River bridge shoreline.
Both of Bazyan's parents survived the attack, rescued by life-saving aid after his mother’s desperate escape; the family cat also survived the ordeal. Bazyan now faces a significant prison sentence, with sentencing scheduled for a later date, as stated by the District Attorney's Office.
