With heavy rainfall on the horizon, Sacramento city officials have announced the activation of a weather-respite center to aid residents seeking shelter from the storm. According to a Sacramento City Express report, the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC), located at 3615 Auburn Blvd., will open its doors from 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 through 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17.
Forecasting consecutive days of rain having been made, the National Weather Service has issued advisories for the area. The OEC is prepared to accept up to 50 individuals seeking refuge from the inclement weather, including walk-ups. Guests can also bring their pets and will find storage for personal belongings if needed.
In an effort to provide additional support, the City of Sacramento is offering community members access to libraries and community centers as weather-respite locations during normal business hours. Moreover, the County of Sacramento has also stepped in, activating the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center (4000 Branch Center Rd.) to cater to residents looking for a place to stay dry and safe during this period.
The city's collaboration with Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) has also resulted in the provision of no-cost transportation options for those heading to and from the respite centers. As reported by the Sacramento City Express, riders can simply present a screenshot or printout of the SacRT flyer for free access on buses or to light rail fare inspection staff when needed, which is only valid to and from the activated centers.
Closely monitoring the National Weather Service’s forecast, the City has communicated their commitment to extending weather-respite operations if necessary. Ensuring everyone has a place to go, the capacity at the OEC will also be monitored to determine the need for further activations. Those seeking assistance or looking for more information on available respite centers should call 211 or visit the recommended website.
