In San Antonio, the 50-year-old tradition "Operation Home Cooking" welcomed over 200 local families who hosted Army and Air Force trainees from Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland for Thanksgiving meals. FOX San Antonio reported that the Smith family has participated in the event for the past 20 years.
Retired Air Force veterans Larry Smith and his wife said they understand the challenge of being away from family during the holidays. FOX San Antonio stated that Mrs. Smith values Thanksgiving, and the couple sees hosting as a way “to share Thanksgiving with someone else,” according to Larry Smith. They remain in contact with some of the trainees they have hosted over the years.
At JBSA-Lackland, more than 700 trainees participated in the Thanksgiving tradition of football and meals. Bill Ackman, commander of the 737 Training Group, told KSAT that “The trainees love it.” He also thanked the San Antonio community for hosting the trainees.
One couple, Jose and Terri Caballero, stated to KSAT that they have participated in the operation for 12 years, sharing the experience of welcoming trainees and providing Texas hospitality. Trainees, including Britton Maze from Canyon Lake and Dennis Erem from New York City, expressed appreciation for the break from training and the chance to enjoy a homecooked meal with families.
