During a gun safety event hosted by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with local law enforcement partners, a total of 62 unwanted firearms were collected from the public. The event, which occurred this past Saturday at the North County Superior Court in Vista, provided an opportunity for individuals to turn in their unwanted firearms responsibly.
According to a statement on the Sheriff's office website, people who turned in handguns, rifles, and shotguns received a $100 gift card, while those surrendering assault weapons were given a $200 gift card. Along with the buyback initiative, free firearm lock boxes and trigger locks were distributed, designed to enhance safety for gun owners still maintaining their arms.
All weapons gathered at the event will undergo processing where those with a history in crimes will see themselves referred to the appropriate agencies. Stolen guns, found amongst the collection, will result in their original owners being contacted. Any firearms that remain unclaimed or cleared of criminal ties are slated for destruction, in compliance with the law.
The successful turnout at the Vista event was made possible with help from partners including the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, the Oceanside Police Department, and San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. "Most importantly, thanks to the public for helping us keep our communities safe by getting unwanted firearms off our streets," the Sheriff's Office acknowledged.
Outside of such events, the public still has the option to relinquish unwanted firearms at any Sheriff's station or substation, as well as at any law enforcement agency – a crucial reminder for ongoing community safety efforts. The department advises gun owners to transport weapons in their vehicle's trunk and to follow directives from deputies upon arrival for a smooth handover.
