Shelby County’s main jail facility, known as 201 Poplar, was placed under a 24-hour visitor lockdown after officials received a threat on last Saturday. According to Action News 5, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) received the threat around 4:40 p.m. and immediately suspended all jail visitations as a precautionary measure.
The suspension affected only outside visitation, and according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), internal jail operations continued as normal, FOX13 Memphis reported. By the following evening, the facility had resumed regular operations.
Details about the nature of the threat have not been released, as investigations are still underway. The incident comes after a series of interviews in which Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner addressed ongoing challenges at the jail, including overcrowding and the strain it places on both the facility and its staff. “The jail was not built the way it was being operated now because of the overcrowding and right now the staff is a big concern of mine being overworked, tired, missing things that they shouldn’t miss,” Bonner said in an interview obtained by WREG.
The sheriff’s office is working to ease these pressures by planning to transfer 300 inmates to other state facilities and another 150 to different locations within Shelby County. This strain comes amid the deaths of three inmates in just over a week, though the causes have not been made public. The recent threat and the resulting security measures have added further concern for the safety and wellbeing of both inmates and staff at 201 Poplar.
