A 22-year-old woman, Chloe Blackmon, has been charged in connection with a road rage incident in Southeast Shelby County that involved gunfire. According to Action News 5, she faces charges of attempted second-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office reported that the incident occurred last Monday near East Holmes Road and Riverdale Road. The victim swerved to avoid a collision after Blackmon’s silver SUV cut in front of their vehicle. A verbal exchange followed, during which Blackmon allegedly fired a gun at the victim’s car, striking the front passenger-side door. Broderick Hill, a local resident, told FOX13 Memphis, "It's kind of disturbing, especially for this particular area of town. It's a great neighborhood." The victim was not injured in the incident.
Shelby County has experienced several similar incidents over the years. The non-profit organization The Trace, which tracks gun violence, reports that Memphis recorded 107 road-rage incidents involving firearms between 2014 and 2023, tying with San Antonio, Texas, and ranking just behind Houston’s 215 incidents. The case involving Blackmon adds to this ongoing pattern.
Following an eight-day search by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Apprehension Team, Blackmon was located and taken into custody in Frayser yesterday. Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner stated in a report obtained by Action News 5, "Firing a weapon at another person in a vehicle over some sort of dispute is an example of reckless, violent conduct that endangers our communities, creating chaos and upheaval in our Shelby County neighborhoods." Blackmon is scheduled to appear in court, though information about bond or specific court dates has not been released.
