The city of Shrewsbury witnessed a medley of police activities between November 3 and November 9 that ranged from routine traffic stops to shoplifting arrests and persistent felony cases. According to an official report from the Shrewsbury Police Department, the week kicked off with an officer pulling over a vehicle for sporting expired license plates. The stop quickly evolved from a minor infraction to the driver's arrest when the officer realized that not only did the individual lack a valid driver's license and vehicle insurance, but the car was also tied to a felony investigation by Saint Louis City Detectives. The culprit found themselves in cuffs while their vehicle was impounded.
On November 4, a misjudged act of camaraderie led to an unusual arrest when a speeding driver was stopped on Shrewsbury Ave. An individual, presumably the driver's friend or coworker obstructed the police scene by parking behind the patrol car and challenging the officer, demanding explanations for the traffic stop. Despite warnings, the individual chose to stand ground and was subsequently arrested due to existing warrants, "the officer provided him with the option to reconsider his choices and leave, but he declined and continued his demands,” the report specified. The speeding driver left with a ticket, but the obstinate “friend” ended up in custody, as per the City of Shrewsbury website.
Shoplifters with existing arrest warrants seemed to be a trend during this week, as two separate incidents on November 6 led to arrests for outstanding felony warrants. One individual arrested for shoplifting in the 7400 block of Watson Road was found to have not one but fourteen warrants to their name and was transferred to Maryland Heights PD for processing, details the report. Another arrest on the same block involved a shoplifter who was handed over to Saint Louis County Intake to face their felony warrant.
Capping the variety incidents, someone decided to publicly execute a personal vendetta against their own jeans by setting them ablaze. The firebug was spotted by an officer on November 8 in the 7300 block of Watson Road, intent on incinerating their denim because "it has something on it. It needs to burn off," as mentioned on the City of Shrewsbury website. Confounded by the absence of any visible contaminants justifying such a drastic measure, the officer issued the individual a summons for negligent burning.
The series of events documented by the Shrewsbury Police Department paints a picture of the unique and sometimes baffling nature of law enforcement. Along with the highlighted occurrences, Shrewsbury officers found themselves amid 7 auto accidents, 6 suspicious activity calls, and 8 theft cases, over the week. Assistance provided to the Fire Department tallied up to 22 calls, and 30 traffic stops further dotted their busy schedule.
