In a joint operation that could easily be mistaken for high-stakes drama but was very much an alarming reality, Sonoma County officials have clamped down on an illegal cannabis extraction lab. According to Permit Sonoma, the bust took place in a 17,000-square-foot warehouse in southwest Santa Rosa on Wednesday, revealing an operation that involved hazardous chemicals and posed a risk to public safety. The inspection, leading up to the raid, was sparked by a collection of signs: unauthorized building improvements, previous violations, loud machinery, a strong smell of cannabis, and neighborhood concerns that ultimately convinced a Superior Court Judge to issue an inspection warrant after the property owner initially denied access.

The operation, which attempted to extract millions of dollars' worth of cannabis secretly, was discovered after officers and officials made their way into the building. Officials described them as unprecedented in the county, requiring the highest level of compliance with fire and life-safety codes. The use of hydrocarbon extraction methods, typically involving highly volatile and explosive substances, posed a serious threat not only to the workers within the warehouse but also to the surrounding community.

Following the operation's bust, a multi-agency collaboration ensued to rectify the perilous situation. "Permit Sonoma’s Fire Prevention and Hazardous Materials Response Teams worked with the Department of Toxic Substances Control, its cleanup contractor, the business owner, Code Enforcement, and the Sonoma County Fire District to remove the hazardous materials and inspect the warehouse for safety violations," Permit Sonoma disclosed.
