As World AIDS Day approaches on Monday, the Southern Nevada Health District is partnering with community groups for events and initiatives to raise awareness and support individuals affected by HIV. As reported by the Southern Nevada Health District, This year’s theme, "Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response," highlights challenges from funding cuts while celebrating community resilience.

In Clark County, over 12,000 residents are living with HIV, and 552 new diagnoses were reported in 2024, an increase from the previous year. Dr. Cassius Lockett, District Health Officer, told KTNV, "World AIDS Day reminds us to honor those lost to AIDS-related illness and renew our commitment to ending HIV. By standing together, we can support those affected and continue working toward a healthier, more equitable future."

The kickoff for these events was Last Sunday's Arts Festival & Fundraiser, where free HIV testing and community resources were made available. This event also featured local performers and vendors, symbolizing a unity of art and health advocacy. Notably, on Wednesday, additional health services, including rapid HIV and hepatitis C screenings and PrEP services for HIV prevention, will be offered by community partners.

Additional events this week include a Human Red Ribbon and a reading of names organized by the Southern Nevada Health Consortium to honor those lost to HIV. Aid for AIDS of Nevada will light the Welcome to Las Vegas sign in red, host trivia events, and offer free HIV testing. The Community Counseling Center is providing HIV testing, education, and gift cards to participants, while at-home HIV test kits are available through the Health District’s Collect2Protect program.
