The parish's residents are hunkering down, with a freeze warning in effect from 9:00 p.m. Monday until 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, highlighting the imminent cold snap, according to the St. Charles Parish website.
Officials aren't taking any chances, also issuing a Red Flag Warning, which points to a powerful mix of strong northerly winds, low humidity, and super dry conditions that could promote swift fire spreading. Despite expectations for winds to die down Monday evening, authorities are advising against outdoor burning, acknowledging the danger that even a single spark could ignite under these circumstances.
As temperatures dip, the parish's officials are urging caution, urging locals to avoid leaving space heaters unattended, reminding them to keep combustibles at a safe distance. In a nod to fire safety, they're also recommending residents make sure their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
Moving on to pet safety, and echoing the sentiments of animal lovers everywhere, officials are stressing that no pet should be left outside for long periods in freezing weather. According to a statement obtained by the St. Charles Parish government's website, "If you are cold, your pet is cold." They're strongly urging that all pets be kept indoors and have suitable shelter if they’re outside, as mandated by state law, to avoid cruelty charges.
