In a nod to those who have donned the military uniform of the United States, the St. Johns County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation on November 4, formally declaring the following week's Tuesday a day of remembrance and appreciation. This official acknowledgement, an annual tradition recognizing November 11, 2025, as Veterans Day, was led by Commissioner Ann Taylor. Veteran figures honored in the ceremony included Colonel Bill Dudley, Colonel Ron Birchall, Sergeant Major Joseph McDermott, and Major General James S. Hartsell, as well as Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs.
During the gathering, esteemed veterans stood to warmly receive the proclamation, which sought to not only to honor their past service but to also remind the community of the sacrifices these men and women have made. As detailed in the proclamation, the St. Johns County aims to ensure that the valiant efforts of its servicemembers are never to be lightly forgotten, nor their stories allowed to dim within the halls of history.
Commissioner Taylor, speaking on behalf of the Board, conveyed the county's deep gratitude through the presentation. Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day commemorating the end of World War I, has evolved into an occasion to honor American veterans of all wars for their patriotism and willingness to serve. Echoing this sentiment, the proclamation highlights the county's commitment to recognizing the courage and sacrifice of all U.S. military veterans.
