As America Recycles Day approaches on November 15, St. Johns County is set to host its "Get Hooked on America Recycles Day" event. According to the county's announcement, the event scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon, is an opportunity for locals to engage in responsible recycling practices. Held at Tillman Ridge Transfer Station on 3005 Allen Nease Road in Elkton, residents can bring their electronic waste, household hazardous materials, and gently used items for donation. The event is free of charge but limited to St. Johns County residents only.
The Solid Waste Division, along with a collaboration with various local organizations, is spearheading the initiative. In a statement obtained by the SJCF, Ashley Mickler, Customer Service Manager for the division, emphasized the ease and importance of the event. "Events like this make it easy for residents to safely recycle and dispose of materials that might otherwise harm our environment," she said on St. Johns County. "By working together, we can reduce waste, protect local waterways, and preserve St. Johns County’s natural beauty for generations to come."
The county's solid waste initiative encourages community members to recycle electronics properly, shred sensitive documents, and safely dispose of items such as paint, motor oil, and batteries. A dedicated on-site shredding service will be available alongside a donation station for those looking to give away gently used clothing and household items. The Sheriff's Office, together with inmate work squads, will be assisting to ensure the collection process runs smoothly and safely.
For ongoing waste management, two public transfer stations operate year-round in the county. The Tillman Ridge and Stratton Road transfer stations are both open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., allowing residents the convenience of responsible waste disposal even beyond scheduled events. Further information on acceptable items for recycling can be found on the St. Johns County Garbage Collection web page.
America Recycles Day, a nationally recognized initiative, underlines the objective of promoting recycling and environmental stewardship throughout communities. By engaging in local activities such as the one hosted by St. Johns County, residents contribute to minimizing landfill waste and fostering a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
