The shores of Crescent Beach in St. Johns County now boast improved accessibility and parking, thanks to a substantial infrastructure project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, held on July 23, marked the official opening of an ADA-compliant walkover and an expanded parking lot, as reported by St. Johns County itself. The addition is designed to ease beach access for individuals using wheelchairs, with beach wheelchairs available for rent from St. Johns County Beach Services.
The project, which encompassed construction costs of nearly $580,000, did not only put in place an accessible walkover; it simultaneously boosted the parking capacity of Crescent Beachfront Park with 26 additional parking spaces. Attended by District 5 Commissioner Ann Taylor, the ribbon-cutting event also saw various county officials and local residents of the Crescent Beach area. Caught in the middle of an ongoing commitment to community wellbeing, Taylor remarked, "Expanding access to safe public spaces, having diverse recreational facilities… so, it’s more than just a path to the beach. It’s a path to inclusion for every member of our St. Johns County community," according to the St. Johns County website.
St. Johns County's drive for improved recreational facilities did not merely end at providing better beach access. Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Kane, in a statement obtained by the St. Johns County Office of Public Affairs, articulated the broader mission: "What we’re trying to do… is provide those outlets for people to come out here and enjoy their quality of life." The expanded opportunities for enjoyment are meant to draw residents to one of the region's prime assets—the beach.
Further information about the project can be found in a video produced by St. Johns County Office of Public Affairs commemorating the upgrade.
