
In a move designed to assist St. Louis residents during cold weather conditions, the City of St. Louis has announced an increase in the number of emergency shelter beds available until December 2. According to a social media post from the City of St. Louis Government, the city’s total count of emergency shelter beds will go from 150 to 215, with a surge capacity up to 265.
Adding to the permanent tally of 400 year-round shelter beds, these temporary additions come as part of a broader effort to ensure that no resident is left exposed to the freezing temperatures, shelter operations are extending to 24-hour periods from 5 p.m. Friday, November 28, through Tuesday, December 2, while daytime warming centers will be accessible starting today through Tuesday, to support those in need.
For individuals without shelter, walk-in options are available starting at 6 p.m. at several locations including the Peter & Paul Jugan Shelter for various demographics in the North City Zone and the Biddle Housing Opportunities Center for single men in the Central City Zone; the Peter & Paul Sidney Shelter also accommodates single men and women in the South City Zone. After 9 p.m., those seeking shelter are instructed to contact the United Way 211 Helpline by dialing 211 for assistance in finding available beds.
In addition, transportation to shelters is an integral part of the city's cold weather response, with pickups scheduled between 5 and 7 p.m. at designated rally points such as Urban League Women's Business Center and the newly added Wellston Loop Community Development Corporation in the North City Zone, locations like Centenary United Methodist Church in the Central City Zone and rally points like the Carondelet Park Tennis and Pickleball Courts in the South City Zone will assist individuals, all details can be found on the city's website where operational hours for warming centers and additional information on the hubs can be accessed. Contact information and operation times for these centers are subject to change based on the weather; individuals are encouraged to call in advance if possible.
