Marking a century and a year in business is no small feat for any establishment, but for General Candy Company, it's a sweet milestone that has been officially recognized. On November 18, a nod of appreciation was given by License Collector Mavis Thompson, Esq., to the candy distributors who have sweetened the lives of St. Louis residents for 101 years. The family-owned business helmed by Jack and Bill Hellwege was commended for their longstanding service in bringing confections to the city and beyond.
In a ceremony, that highlighted the company's longevity and dedication, Thompson celebrated the Hellwerges' nearly five-decade-long involvement in the enterprise. Jack and Bill, as company stewards, have maintained relationships with a variety of buyers ranging from local pharmacies to grocery stores. Additionally, according to a statement on the City of St. Louis' website, they also cater to folks who walk right into their store, weaving a continuity of community and commerce.
General Candy Company's endurance speaks to more than just the ability to sell sweets. It’s about nurturing a business that meshes with the fabric of a community. In accepting the award, Jack's son-in-law, John, who has recently joined the family business, expressed his enthusiasm for the role. He was quoted on the city's website sharing his delight in "meeting the vibrant and diverse people they service every day." This sentiment echoes the company's commitment to its clientele and its celebration of St. Louis' rich tapestry of individuals.
