The residents and businesses of Sterling Heights are coming together for the city's 47th Annual Ken Stempowski Memorial Food Drive. Spearheaded by the City's Department of Public Works, this longstanding communal effort has taken on a new sense of urgency amidst the constraints placed upon residents by the federal shutdown and the halt of SNAP benefits, as reported by the City of Sterling Heights announcement.
Initiated nearly five decades ago by Ken Stempowski, a DPW employee whose small act of charity laid the foundation for this event, the food drive continues to hold fast to its mission of neighborly support. "Ken’s legacy reminds us that one person’s compassion can create lasting change," DPW Director Mike Moore told the City of Sterling Heights officials. Having been expanded this year to partner with the Chaldean Community Foundation, the initiative aims to broaden its impact and combat food insecurity exacerbated by present challenges.
Donation bins are set to be stationed throughout the city at various public buildings including City Hall, the Community Center, and the Sterling Heights Public Library, according to the information provided. Contributions can also be made during Sterling Heights' signature event, Sterling Christmas, scheduled for the beginning of December. Mayor Michael C. Taylor highlighted the community's spirit, stressing that the partnership with the Chaldean Community Foundation is a critical step in reaching out to all residents affected during this time, echoing the sentiments released by the City of Sterling Heights.
Residents willing to help can drop off their nonperishable food donations until December 17th at the listed locations, ranging from the DPW Facility to the Chaldean Community Foundation's offices. In addition to physical donations, monetary contributions are welcomed, with all proceeds going towards the Community Food Bank of Macomb County, which supports a network of local food pantries and meal services, as the City of Sterling Heights announcement clarifies.
