Tampa's holiday travel just got a hi-tech boost for efficiency and safety. The City of Tampa has fully integrated a new mapping technology platform by One.network into its traffic management system. This addition is said to be a significant advancement over previous methods which relied heavily on outdated tools such as spreadsheets and emails, and aims to alleviate road congestion particularly during peak travel seasons.
The One.network platform enables city traffic managers and construction crews to promptly update information about roadwork and closures with simplicity. According to Tampa's official announcement, these updates are quickly communicated to major GPS providers like Google, Waze, and Apple Maps, usually within five minutes. The swiftness of this system stands in stark relief to the former, sluggish measures that once hindered the flow of critical traffic information.
Travelers and residents can access the real-time map on the City's website which displays various work zones, the affected traffic lanes, and the expected timelines for these disruptions. This resource is conveniently available at tampa.gov/road-closures and serves as a tool for trip planning, especially useful during the holiday rush when managing travel time is of the essence.
The City has been utilizing One.network since January of 2024, joining other agencies such as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Hillsborough County, and the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) in this regional collaborative effort. This allows for a broader perspective on traffic management, extending the oversight beyond just the city boundaries and improving work zone safety by providing drivers with advanced notice on construction areas to avoid.
