Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated legal action against two school districts, Round Rock ISD and Leander ISD, along with their Boards of Trustees, for declining to exhibit copies of the Ten Commandments as mandated by state law. Citing direct titillation of the Texan legal heritage, Paxton claims these educational bodies are in defiance of a statutory requirement. According to a statement from the Texas Attorney Genaral's Office, "These rogue ISD officials and board members blatantly disregarded the will of Texas voters who expect the legal and moral heritage of our state to be displayed in accordance with the law."
Despite receipt of the Ten Commandments copies that comply with the legal parameters, the refusal to display them was confirmed via an email on September 15, 2025, from Round Rock ISD's General Counsel. Referencing an unrelated legal stay, the Texas Attorney Genaral's Office emphasizes that restraining order allowing eleven districts to abstain from showing the religious text does not pertain to these two districts in question. Having been presented with privately donated copies of the Ten Commandments, both districts chose not to display them, which according to Paxton, signifies they are "violating state law but also ignoring the will of Texans."
The contentious issue here pivots on the interpretation of law and the separation of church and state, a principle that's been historically contentious in the American legal system. This lawsuit underscores a deepening fissure between what some view as the upholding of traditional values and others perceive as an infringement on constitutional grounds, as reported by the Texas Attorney Genaral's Office.
Galveston ISD is also facing legal action from Paxton for a similar issue. The Texas Attorney General’s Office sued the district after its school board chose not to display the Ten Commandments as instructed. This move shows the Attorney General’s broader effort to enforce what his office sees as widespread noncompliance by school districts.
