Texas Republican Rep. Troy Nehls announced he will not run for reelection in 2026, joining other GOP members stepping down. Nehls, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, said after a Thanksgiving discussion with his family that it was time to "focus on my family and return home after this Congress." He also spoke with Trump before making the announcement, according to NBC News and ABC13.
Troy Nehls’ tenure in Congress since 2021 included proposals such as honoring Trump on currency and at an airport, while he reflected on his public service in the military, law enforcement, and politics. With his impending departure, his brother Trever Nehls announced his candidacy, aiming to continue Troy’s conservative agenda.
Trever Nehls stated, "District 22 needs a Representative who will follow in Troy’s footsteps and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Trump to defend our conservative values, secure the border, protect our families, and oppose the reckless and radical agenda that Democrats continue to press upon the American people," as stated by NBC News. This move shows the Nehls family’s political plans as House Republicans face a narrow majority and the resignation of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, adding uncertainty to the 2026 races.
