An 11-year-old boy was tragically killed during a road rage incident on the westbound 215 freeway in Henderson, bringing traffic to a halt this morning. According to FOX5 Vegas, the shooting occurred near Gibson Road after two drivers began aggressively maneuvering to overtake each other. The situation escalated when windows were rolled down and a heated exchange between the occupants of the vehicles ensued.
The confrontation led to one driver pulling out a gun and firing a shot which, while on the way to school, struck the child who was a passenger in the other car. News 3 LV reports that after the shooting, the child's stepfather collided with the suspect's car, bringing both vehicles to a stop amidst ongoing traffic.
A nearby Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer, flagged down during the incident, was able to detain the 22-year-old suspect now facing an open murder charge. As stated by KTNV, Henderson Police Chief Reggie Rader confirmed the shooter’s arrest and emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting the lengthy expected road closure to serve the ongoing investigation.
In the wake of the tragedy, Chief Rader issued a heartfelt plea to the community to value life and practice patience on the road. He stated, "It's no secret that our roadways can get congested, and we're doing improvement projects to try to ease that burden, but what I need is for everyone to have an appreciation for the sanctity of life," as told KTNV. The interchange ramps from both directions of I-11 to the 215 also faced closures, creating significant traffic problems for hours.
While the area has since been reopened, Henderson Police continue to advise caution on the roads and suggest alternate routes when possible. In a statement obtained by FOX5 Vegas, authorities have confirmed the recovery of the firearm involved and reassured the public that there is no further danger stemming from the incident.
