Despite a recent hiccup in federal funding, the wheels of justice in Western North Carolina didn't grind to a halt. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson highlighted the persistence of the U.S. Attorney’s Office during what he referred to as "the longest shutdown in U.S. history," where, remarkably, much of the staff continued to serve without pay. According to a statement from Ferguson's office, released today, their dedication ensured "the safety of our communities and our mission to uphold justice were never compromised."
In a detailed account of their steadfast work during the shutdown, the U.S. Attorney’s Office outlined several critical cases. Spearheaded by Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative, the office charged, indicted, or sentenced various individuals for crimes including first-degree murder, illegal firearms possession, and major drug trafficking, all aimed at reinforcing law and order amidst administrative dysfunction. Announcing their outcomes, Ferguson said, “Our work never stops,” nodding to the resilience displayed by his staff facing personal challenges without remuneration.
The range of offenses processed during the appropriations lapse paint a picture of the unrelenting battle against crime in the region. Highlighted cases involve a spectrum of illicit activities, from Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., charged with violence causing death on a railroad carrier, to Madison Dare Winslow's 15-year sentence for distributing fentanyl leading to a teenager's fatal overdose.
Among the litany of cases stands Eunorio Cortez Cortez, sentenced to 64 months in prison for illegal reentry by a deported alien, having previously exposed themselves and caused bodily harm to a family member. Others, like the Dumitru brothers from Romania, residing unlawfully in the U.S., are now facing federal charges for a vast fraud operation. Not even a shutdown could dull the office's edge in clamping down on such transgressions – a testament, Ferguson underscores, to the office's resolve to "protect the people of Western North Carolina."
This adherence to duty has sent a clear signal to those operating on the wrong side of the law. As stated by Ferguson, “Those who threaten public safety, pollute our neighborhoods with deadly drugs, exploit the vulnerable, or steal taxpayer dollars will face the consequences.”
