In a spectacle that blurs the lines between media sensationalism and real-life stakes, Jane Davis, a University of Cincinnati instructor, put her competitive edge to the test in Netflix’s reality show, "Squid Game: The Challenge". The adjunct marketing instructor at Carl H. Lindner College of Business was one among the 456 contenders vying for a life-changing prize as they embarked on a journey inspired by the streaming service's hit series, "Squid Game".
Having deeply immersed herself in the realm of sales over the past two decades, Davis combines her love for reality TV and strategic gaming into a pedagogy that excites her students. "I love reality TV, but I also love games. I think it comes from being in sales," Davis told the University of Cincinnati News. Driven as ever, she admits to being a "very competitive person," an attribute no doubt stoked by her time navigating the unpredictable waters of sales.
As part of her reality TV adventure, Davis was persuaded to audition after a marathon session of watching the original "Squid Game" series with her daughter, leading to a pivotal trial by leisure-turned-serious pursuit. Her foray into the televised gauntlet was not just for the thrill; it carried through to her classroom, where she teaches Marketing 3000 - Confident Selling. Davis brings the show's competitive essence to her academic curriculum, using game show-styled review activities to stir up the competitive spirit amongst her students. In her second semester at UC, teaching has become a passion for Davis, who always knew that one day, it would be something she'd venture into. "I love teaching. It's kind of where I thrive," she explained in the same breath, according to the University of Cincinnati News.
The world of academia and entertainment crossed paths with Davis’s participation in "Squid Game: The Challenge," according to UC News, carving out a spectacle that her students and viewers alike can draw vicarious thrill from. This educator's journey can further be streamed, as the series "Squid Game: The Challenge" is now available for viewing on Netflix. Davis's unique approach to pedagogy, tested against the crucible of a reality game show, stands as a testament to the intrepid spirit she brings into the classroom and an affirmation of the strength hewn from years in sales.
