As the vibrant hues of autumn fade and the last Jack-o'-Lanterns begin to wilt, Upper Arlington introduces a season of sustainability with its annual pumpkin composting initiative, starting early November and running through December 8. According to the City of Upper Arlington's announcement, residents can bring their post-Halloween pumpkins to Fancyburg Park, where designated containers await to ferry them off to a composting facility.
However, the task of discarding these festive gourds comes with a caution: ensure that all non-organic materials such as decorations and candles are removed before dropping them off, because these items contaminate the organic waste stream and, by doing so, undermine the composting process.. The city explicitly instructs that pumpkins should not be placed in the food waste drop-off bins at Sunny 95 Park, the Municipal Services Center, and Fancyburg Park, nor should they be tossed in the curbside food waste containers for those who participate in the curbside food waste collection program.
This eco-conscious move aligns with Upper Arlington’s broader recycling efforts, providing residents with a convenient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of their holiday remnants while contributing to the city's green waste reduction goals. Citizens interested in learning more about what can and cannot be recycled can head to the Trash and Recycling webpage for a comprehensive overview of the recycling options and resources available in the area.
With the composting season at its prime, Upper Arlington calls upon its community to partake in these simple yet impactful habits, habits that, while seemingly small, are part of a much larger tapestry of environmental stewardship that help solidify a future where sustainability is not just a concept but a lived experience, it's in the robust life of our parks, the measured steps of our Public Service teams and in every repurposed pumpkin laid to rest in the soft earth, poised to return as a nutrient to the cycle of life.
