The United States Postal Service (USPS) is doubling down on efficiency this holiday season—its high-water mark for mail volume—with the introduction of a real-time Holiday Mail Counter. This new feature tracks the number of mailpieces and packages making their way through the USPS network, in an effort to provide transparency and underscore the agency’s enhanced capacity for America's increased demand.
After a year of network transformation and modernization, USPS confidently claims that their daily package processing capacity has jumped to roughly 88 million packages, notably up from 60 million during the previous holiday rush, according to KOMO News. To manage the heftier mail flow, the agency has opened hundreds of improved facilities and installed new sorting machines across the country, a robust reinforcement, to its now 614 machines.
In terms of manpower, there's a strategic move to bring in extra hands. The USPS plans to hire around 14,000 temporary employees who will shore up their full-time workforce through the season’s end. This expansion is part of USPS’s assurance that customers can expect their mail and packages to be delivered, on average, in less than three days—and in 2-3 days for the same regional service areas, the USPS stated on its website.
Amid the mechanical hum and shuffle of packages, it's the human element at USPS that remains the driving force behind the season's delivery success. The commitment to meet every American’s holiday mailing and shipping needs echoes through the organization’s historical dedication to service, an unwavering pledge spanning some 250 years, as KIRO 7 reports.
