Concerns have arisen after a 5-year-old boy, Oliver Epstein, was found wandering alone nearly a mile from his Valencia school, having left an after-school program unnoticed. The incident, which took place on the afternoon of November 4, has left his family urgently seeking answers and improvements in school safety measures. Oliver's nanny discovered him by chance at a McDonald's on McBean Parkway, a busy Santa Clarita thoroughfare and took him home.
Natalie Epstein, Oliver's mother, told NBC Los Angeles, "I just envision him walking, like away. Where did he go? Like, was he looking for our home? Was he looking for me?" This emotional recounting followed an instance when Natalie and her husband, Brett Epstein, had been informed by after-school program supervisors that their son was on campus when he had already wandered off. Even after contacting the school, the Epstein family was initially misled about their son's whereabouts.
The boy's father revealed in a statement obtained by The Santa Clarita Valley Signal that Oliver's absence was unnoticed despite the child needing to cross a potentially dangerous intersection. "It’s really bad between Copperhill and McBean," Natalie stated to KTLA’s Sandra Mitchell, expressing the worry caused by heavy traffic on the route their son had taken.
In response to the event, the Saugus Union School District Superintendent Colleen Hawkins said, "When district staff was alerted to the situation, an investigation into the incident was immediAtely conducted after confirming that the child was safe and with their family. Based on what we learned from this incident, appropriate corrective action has been taken, including but not limited to improvements in student supervision protocols and in securing facilities." Despite these assurances, the Epsteins, troubled by the incident, have decided to remove Oliver from the after-care program and are considering legal options.
In the wake of the distressing situation, the Epsteins hope their experiences will encourage greater awareness and lead to enhanced school safety protocols. They believe fundamental changes are necessary, including additional staff for oversight, stricter gate access control, and the installation of more security cameras to ensure the safety of all children on campus. Detecting flaws in the system through their son's experience, they intend to act so that other families might not endure similar anguish.
