A man has been taken into custody in connection to a deadly shooting that occurred in Mountain View, Hawai’i, as the Hawai’i Island police have launched a second-degree murder investigation, according to the Hawai'i Police Department news release.
Police identified the suspect as 40-year-old Joseph Davis from Volcano after responding to a distress call yesterday; it was approximately 1:30 p.m. when officers arrived at the Mountain View Mini Mart parking lot, where the victim, a 52-year-old Hilo man whose identity has not yet been made public, was found with multiple gunshot wounds, the fatal incident unfolded in broad daylight, and it was alleged that the suspect was detained while still in possession of the firearm used, as reported by the Hawai'i Police Department.
Evidence recovered at the scene included a small zippered bag which, as described by witnesses, Davis used to store the gun after the shooting. Hawai'i Fire Department personnel joined the officers at the scene and endeavored to save the man's life, but their efforts proved fruitless as the victim was declared dead after being moved to Hilo Benioff Medical Center.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation by the Area I Criminal Investigation Division. Police have appealed to the public for any information. Detective Lisa Ebesugawa can be contacted at (808) 961-2382 or via email at [email protected] for anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or possesses relevant information.
An autopsy is scheduled this coming Friday morning to determine the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, the police are holding Davis at the East Hawai'i Detention Facility pending further legal proceedings.
