A tragic turn of events unfolded after an unprovoked attack left a 50-year-old visitor dead in Waikiki. Following the altercation, which occurred just past noon on Saturday, Nov. 8, the visitor was rushed to The Queen’s Medical Center with critical head injuries. He was later pronounced dead last Wednesday night, as reported by KITV.
The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Ishmael Piula Luavasa, was initially charged with second-degree attempted murder. Nonetheless, following the visitor's death, Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney promptly upgraded these charges to encompass second-degree murder. Luavasa, consequently being held without bail, faced a preliminary hearing last Thursday, according to the same KITV report.
Authorities are actively continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault. The incident, which took place in front of the Waikiki Beachside Hostel on Lemon Road, involved the two men, with the victim being assaulted for reasons yet to be determined. The Honolulu Police Department is urging members of the community to come forward with any information they might have concerning this case, indicating that tips can be shared by calling 911 or reaching out to CrimeStoppers at 808-955-8300, as per details from a KHON2 article.
As the investigation moves to newly navigate the implications of a second-degree murder charge, the potential sentence hangs in the balance, potentially being life in prison with the possibility of parole for Luavasa, should he be convicted as charged.
