In a decisive move to energize Eastern Wake County, the Wake County Board of Commissioners has teamed up with the Town of Zebulon and Capitol Broadcasting Company (CBC) in a lease agreement concerning Five County Stadium—once the stomping grounds of the Carolina Mudcats. Signed and sealed, this deal charts a new beginning for the venue with CBC taking the reins of the stadium's redevelopment and management starting January 1, 2026, according to the Wake County.
"Today’s vote moves us one step closer to transforming the Stadium into a year-round destination for families, sports fans and visitors," Wake County’s vice chair, Don Mial, indicated in a statement signifying the potential surge of life and economic rejuvenation slated for Zebulon and its environs, in tandem, the Town of Zebulon also greenlit the lease during their evening board meeting, somewhat solidifying the collective efforts to rebrand and revitalize a pivotal sports and community landmark. The Mayor of Zebulon, Glenn York, expressed pride in the town's growth and the stadium's continued legacy, stating, "Five County Stadium has always been part of our story, and these improvements will help keep it a place that brings people together," as per the Wake County's announcement.
Financials also see a shake-up as the County ties off its fiscal duties with the Carolina Mudcats by accepting over $238,000 in lease termination and rent, and shuffles $8.5 million within capital funds to bankroll major facility enhancements, stated the Wake County article. This move comes as part of a larger investment exceeding $10 million, which envelops both an initial push from County and Town amounting to $8.26 million for stadium improvements and a $1.97 million Capital Repairs Fund. This swath of cash signifies their commitment to preserving and polishing the stadium as a community jewel.
Under a 10-year agreement with CBC, running through December 31, 2035, the media company will pay a total of $710,000 to the County and Town and share in stadium naming rights revenues. Starting in 2026, the stadium will host a Coastal Plain League baseball team each season and serve as a venue for Wake Technical Community College baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s soccer games.
The County and Town can also use the facility for up to 10 events each year without rental fees. Planned upgrades for 2026 include a synthetic field surface, improved outfield walls and lighting, renovated locker rooms and offices, enhanced social and family areas, and updated concession stands and concourses.
