Governor Bob Ferguson concluded a week-long visit to Western State Hospital, where he worked alongside staff, met with patients, and observed operations and construction projects at the state-run behavioral health facility. His visit, from Monday through Thursday, focused on understanding the hospital’s civil and forensic wards.

According to the Governor's Office release, Ferguson toured several key sites, including the new forensic hospital under construction and scheduled for completion in 2028, as well as the Child Study and Treatment Center, which provides rehabilitation for young patients. He also visited the Gage Center, expected to open in 2026, which will support forensic patients transitioning back into the community through therapeutic and skill-building programs.

During his stay, the Governor held discussions with labor union representatives from SEIU 1199 and the Washington Federation of State Employees to better understand workforce challenges and needs. He also toured the Western State Hospital Museum, which highlights the history of behavioral health care in Washington.

Department of Social and Health Services Secretary Angela Ramirez noted the significance of the Governor’s direct engagement with staff and patients, emphasizing the shared effort to improve behavioral health services in the state.
