As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) is ramping up efforts to keep roads around Washington State University (WSU) safe for students and families traveling across the state. An emphasis patrol will be put in place from November 20th through November 30th, focusing on key areas such as State Routes 26 & 195 and Interstate 90, particularly over Snoqualmie Pass, as reported by WSP's official announcement.
The emphasis patrols will specifically target driving behaviors that often lead to accidents, including speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving. Motorists are advised to be particularly mindful of speed limits and to be prepared for winter driving conditions that can change rapidly. In a statement provided to WSP, District 4 Commander Captain Jeff Otis emphasized, "We appreciate everyone’s help and diligence to ensure that we have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving this year."
Travelers can stay informed about road and weather conditions through the Washington State Department of Transportation's (WSDOT) website and mobile apps. Current road statuses, weather forecasts, and mountain pass updates are all available to assist travelers in their holiday plans. This resource is particularly valuable for those passing through areas prone to winter weather challenges.
Ahead of the heavy travel period, WSP recommends students and other motorists prepare their vehicles for winter conditions. Suggestions include equipping cars with an emergency kit containing items such as water, food, blankets, winter clothing, and emergency flares. Motorists should also ensure their vehicle fluids are full and that car batteries are in good working order. It's advisable—and sometimes required—to have good all-season or snow tires, as well as tire chains, especially when navigating mountain passes.
With an eye on safety and community well-being, WSP, WSU, and local officials are collectively working to ensure that those journeying to and from Pullman can do so securely. As students and families prepare to travel for the festivities, these patrols are a reminder that a collective effort can contribute to a safer holiday period. "GoCougs," echoes the sentiment from the WSP, as they gear up for a proactive Thanksgiving season.
