A 43-year-old man allegedly pulled a knife on a store clerk and attempted to take money from the cash register on Thanksgiving afternoon on San Antonio’s West Side, according to police. The attempted robbery happened around 4:20 p.m. near Leal Street and North Zarzamora. The suspect left the area before officers arrived.
Police said the 33-year-old cashier struggled with the man while he was holding the knife and was able to get away without serious injuries. Officers set up a perimeter in the area, found the suspect, and took him into custody. He is facing a charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, along with other pending charges, according to Fox San Antonio. The investigation remains ongoing.
How Police Say The Robbery Unfolded
Investigators said the man first appeared to be a regular customer making a purchase. He then allegedly pulled out a knife and demanded money from the register. Police said the 33-year-old clerk resisted, leading to a physical struggle. The suspect then ran from the store before officers arrived. Officers searched the surrounding area and later arrested him. No serious injuries were reported involving the clerk or police.
Charges And What That Means
Under Texas law, displaying or using a deadly weapon during a robbery elevates the offense to aggravated robbery. This is a first-degree felony and is punishable by five to 99 years in prison under Texas Penal Code §29.03, as per the Justia U.S. Law.
For now, the arrest is only an initial step. It is not a conviction, and prosecutors will determine how to proceed as detectives continue collecting evidence and witness statements.
Local Pattern Of Retail Violence
This incident comes during a year in which several robberies have been reported at West Side businesses. In one September case, a gas station clerk was stabbed during an attempted robbery, according to KSAT.
These incidents have led some business owners and residents to request increased patrols and a stronger police presence along busy retail areas, noting that many employees have been involved in recent confrontations.
What’s Next
The case is still under investigation, and authorities have not released further identifying information about the suspect other than his age.
Additional details are expected as formal charges, court filings, and hearing dates are processed. The incident highlights how quickly a routine shift at a store can escalate into a dangerous situation.
